Interview with Scott Harris, Founder and CEO of ShutterCal, a daily photography project (Original Version):
If you had to do an elevator pitch for ShutterCal – what would you say?
„ShutterCal“ is the Mount Everest of Photography projects. Taking one daily photo everyday for a year is an incredible challenge of drive and dedication. It’s a true achievement not everyone can accomplish – and we make it fun.
How many people work at shuttercal; how many users do you have?
ShutterCal is a small American business owned and operated by myself, Kim Wong, and Dan Ferrante. We’re currently a community of 13,500. Some members are now starting to help with development.
Can you say a few words about your business model?
We’re not concerned about being a big website, we’re only concerned about being a great website. The small community feel is what makes ShutterCal great. We spend zero dollars on marketing and the site is completely ad free. We are a completely independent and self sustainable business due to the incredible quality of our monthly print service and the membership support of amazing ShutterCal’ers.
Do you have personal favourites? What are the best pictures you have come across while working at ShutterCal?
It might be odd to say my own – but this project was started as a way for me and my girlfriend to start taking more pictures and documenting our lives. After five years, we can both scroll through each other’s calendars and see the progression of our lives together and the single moment we thought was most worth documenting in every single day. I consider our calendars to be the most important worldly possession I have.
Besides that – there are so many incredible photos on ShutterCal – I collect my very favorites right here in my fav section for other members to explore and discover. @brooklynTheory is definitely one of my favorite photographers – not only on ShutterCal, but of all time …includes published pros.
Apart from posting photos, what creative ideas have people come up with so far?
There are a lot – but right now Sarah Cate comes to mind. She writes messages to herself on her hands. She’s using photography to overcome personal hardships and empower herself daily. It’s incredible.
Thanks for taking the time.
